Human rights during the war and rebuilding: what will the RIGHTS NOW! programme be like

11 May 2023

On 3–7 June, we invite our audience to attend the events of the RIGHTS NOW! human rights programme. This year, the events are unified by the image of the future, part of which is recovery after our victory. Every day at 11:00 a.m., you will be able to attend conversations in the format of Coffee with Human Rights Advocates. At 4:00 p.m. at the events of the Ukraine War Archive we will discuss how Ukraine defends its interests at the international arena and how to bring the accusations of multiple crimes against the aggressor country to their conclusion in the form of a sentence. At RIGHTS NOW! events at 6:30 p.m., we will talk about implementing the plan of the country’s recovery and development set out in the Lugano conference*, and about what helps us live through the war and what we will be like after it.

Here are some more details about the programme.

It is impossible to imagine changes in Ukrainian society without the efforts of civil activists. During Coffee with Human Rights Advocates, we will find out how documentaries help people defend their rights, why the planning of Ukraine’s recovery is impossible without people with disabilities, how to avoid catastrophic outcomes for the environment as a result of the Russian aggression, and why sex education must be essential for teenagers and adults.

For over a year, Ukraine War Archive, a project by NGO Docudays and Infoscope, has been collecting and cataloguing digital materials in order to preserve history and fairly present the events in the legal, public, and cultural discourses. As a part of the RIGHTS NOW! programme, the Archive team is preparing discussions about the practice of testimonies at the International Criminal Court and the recognition of the Russian Federation’s crimes in Ukraine as a genocide. There will also be an event about the cultural heritage stolen by the enemy and the methods for returning it.

On 3 June, RIGHTS NOW! events will begin with the conversation Recovery after injuries: How military people deal with bureaucracy. Together with NGO Principle, we will find out what can help minimise the bureaucratic procedures and improve the interactions with the government so that our fighters feel valued. On 4 June, we will discuss how to help children overcome their stress caused by the war at the event War traumas: How hibuki therapy helps children.

The bravery of Ukrainians in the fight for their freedom has become a symbol of unbreakability for the entire world. On 5 June, we invite you to the conversation Mental self-defence: Why it is important to joke about the war, where we will discuss how Ukrainians manage to joke in these hard times and what is the phenomenon of this mental resilience.

On 7 June, RIGHTS NOW! will be concluded by the event Rebuilding Ukraine: How to make communities more comfortable for everyone. We will discuss the rebuilding and modernisation of Ukrainian cities, towns and villages. We will also talk about how communities can influence the process of rebuilding to make sure that everyone’s interests are taken into account.

All the events of the RIGHTS NOW! human rights programme will be held at Zhovten Cinema in the Sweet Life hall with sign language interpretation. Access to the events is free.
