The art of editing documentary film

A conversation between two of Europe's most experienced film editors. Dana Bunescu (Romania) and Niels Pagh Andersen (Denmark) will open the door to their editing rooms and share their methods, tricks and knowledge, from the exciting journey of transforming filmed reality into a film.

Niels Pagh
Andersen started his career as assistant on fiction film when he was 16 years old. Since 1979 he has worked as a film-editor and cut more than 250 films of widely different categories. They include the fiction films The Pathfinder, the Academy Award nominee and Golden Globe nominee Everlasting Moments, and the documentaries The Act of Killing and The Look of Silence, both Academy Award nominees. He has lectured and taught at film schools and universities around the world, and is a professor in editing at the Norwegian Film School. In 2005 he won the prestigious lifetime achievement award, the Roos Prize, the Danish Film Institute’s grand documentary prize for outstanding efforts in documentary filmmaking. In 2021 he published the book Order in chaos: Storytelling and editing in documentary film.

Dana Bunescu is an editor and sound designer. She studied physics at the University of Bucharest and editing, sound and animation in the Multimedia Department of the National University for Theatre and Film, Bucharest. As editor and sound designer she has collaborated with numerous directors from the Romanian New Wave such as Cristi Puiu, Cristian Mungiu, Calin Peter Netzer, Andrei Ujica and Radu Jude. She is the co-author of two documentary movies, The Distance between Me and Me, together with Mona Nicoara, and The Chalice. On Sons and Daughters, together with Catalina Tesar. She was awarded the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale 2017.
