Courage and Freedom at the Equality Festival in Chernivtsi

14 May 2018

Courage to talk about your sexuality and freedom in your own body are the key themes of the films Silvana and Venus. In Chernivtsi on 19th of the May, people will have an exclusive opportunity to watch these two documentaries, provided by Docudays UA, during the Equality Festival.

Equality Festival is a public platform for all people, regardless of their national or gender identity, or their orientation. In particular, it is a way to get closer to a more open world which leaves no place for prejudice. This year, in addition to documentary screenings, the festival will host thematic lectures about othering practices and about the ways to express your position in the language of art.

Silvana by Mika Gustafson, Olivia Kastebring, Christina Tsiobanelis

What defines us, our desires, thoughts or feelings, our relationships with our social environment and the world around us, and, ultimately, our future? All these questions are raised by three Swedish directors Mika Gustafson, Olivia Kastebring, Christina Tsiobanelis in their feature-length debut Silvana. They study the destruction of norms and stereotypes, and at the same time they tell the universal love story of the famous rapper Silvana, which will not leave anyone indifferent.

Venus by Lea Glob, Mette Carla Albrechtsen

And the directors of the film Venus, Lea Glob, Mette Carla Albrechtsen, consider the question, “Do we have a language which could help us understand our sexuality an desires?” They started the project as a study of their own experiences, but for a better understanding of those, they listened to many young female residents of Copenhagen. The film protagonists are incredibly beautiful in their sincerity, vulnerability, and striving to understand their own sexuality.

Entry to all screenings and events of the Equality Festival is free.

Screening partners: Docudays UA, Norwegian Helsinki Committee and Equality Festival
