Discussion “Does Propaganda Really Exist?”

Visual Culture Research Center and “Political Critique” invite on a discussion, the
aim of which will be problematization of the contemporary notion of propaganda,
definition of possibility and need for propaganda-free portrayal of war (e.g. in
documentaries), and, finally, drawing the borderlines between propaganda and
engaged position, between propagandist and antagonist.
Participants of the discussion:
Mustafa Nayem – deputy, former journalist, one of the founders and chief editor of Hromadske TV, activist of “Stop Censorship!” journalist movement;
Olha Bryukhovetska – PhD in Philosophy, senior lecturer of Cultural Studies department of the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, culture researcher, cinema theorist;
Svetla Turnin – film expert, culture researcher, co-founder and executive director of Cinema Politica, organizer of workshops and discussions on festival programming policies, documentary cinema, and activism at international festivals and conferences;
Yevhen Fedchenko – PhD in Political Science, senior lecturer, director of School of Journalism at the National University of “Kyiv-Mohyla Academy”, international journalist;
Pavel Sheremet – Belorussian, Russian, and Ukrainian journalist, author of documentary
films Wild Hunt and Wild Hunt – 2, Chechnya Diary, 1991 – the Last Year of the Empire, Execution of Saddam, War without Winner, and many others.
