Documentaries about the most urgent child issues will be shown in the 100 cities and towns in some 24 regions of Ukraine during October - December 2009. This initiative of the Docudays Ua is in the framework of the UNICEF World Film Festival on child rights dedicated to the 20th Anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of a Child. Film demonstrations and discussions of the documentaries in the schools and universities of Ukraine will take place during the Festival. Special press-screenings and discussion sessions with experts, human rights activists, lawyers, educators, local and central government will be focused on the child rights issues. Every year the programme of the International Film Festival Docudays Ua is enriched with the films about child rights issues. Children’s issues concern documentary film makers worldwide and many films are awarded with international honours. This year the world community is celebrating 20th anniversary of the Convention of the Rights of a Child. Aiming to attract public attention to the problem of child rights neglect in Ukraine and raise awareness on child rights the special programmes for targeted audiences are developed by the Festival. On 20 November 1989, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), establishing one set of fundamental rights for all children and young people. Today, the CRC is the most widely ratified human rights agreement in the world. It was ratified by 193 states, except the United States and Somalia. Ukraine has made a number of commitments to improve the wellbeing of children - particularly by signing the UN Convention of the Rights of the Child. On 27 February 1991 the Convention was ratified by the Parliament of Ukraine (Verkhovna Rada) decree №789XII (78912) and it came into force for Ukraine on 27 September 1991. http://www.unicef.org/ukraine/ukr/children_11699.html
